A recent study published in the Journal of Periodontology highlights the connection between gum health and systemic inflammation in individuals with hypertension. In a cross-sectional study of 151 participants with high blood pressure, over 50% were found to have periodontitis or peri-implantitis. The study measured C-reactive protein (CRP) levels, a marker of inflammation, and found that participants with periodontitis had significantly higher CRP levels than healthy individuals, while those with both periodontitis and peri-implantitis showed even greater inflammation. The findings suggest that peri-implant diseases are linked to systemic inflammation, making gum and implant health crucial for managing conditions like hypertension. The study calls for further research into the association, emphasizing the importance of oral health in preventing broader health issues.
